Welcome to Planets for Beginners! This week we are covering the planet Saturn! This planet is unique in many ways, but especially because in ancient astrology, this would have been the last of the planets, since Uranus and Neptune where not included until relatively recently.
Saturn the Planet
Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun, and is known for the rings that appear around it. This planet is a gas giant and is orbited by 62 moons and the rock and icy material that creates its rings. This gas giant’s years are about 29.4 years long, but like Jupiter, it does have a shorter day, 10 hours and 39 minutes long.
Saturn and the Gods
Unlike the earlier planets that I have covered in this series, Saturn is not named after a god, but rather a titan – the parents of the gods. Saturn is the roman equivalent to Cronus, the defeated father of Zeus. Cronus was the last of the 12 titans born from Ouranos and Gaia (the sky and the earth) and was overturned in rule by his children (specifically Zeus) While this is Cronus’ legacy, he was also the god of harvest and agriculture.
Astrological Meaning
Saturn is the ruler of Capricorn and the co-ruler of Aquarius. This planet influences things such as structure, ethics, hard work, and limitations. Where this planet is within your chart has an affect on how you accept responsibility and interact with limitations. This planet is also the planet of karma, just like with its rings, what goes around comes around.
In Retrograde
Since this is ruler of limitations and boundaries, when Saturn is in retrograde, this is a time to examine boundaries and limitations and see if they are true. Since this is also the ruler of karma, so you can expect your energies over the period that it was direct to start returning to you.

The World is a card that is associated with Saturn because it signifies that you have reached fulfillment (harvested what you need).
